Our chapter, in partnership with the Illinois Conservation Foundation and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources will be hosting a Youth Wingshooting Clinic and Pheasant Hunt on March 10th at the Torstenson Youth Conservation Education Center near Pecatonica, IL. The event is co-sponsored by the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.
This is an opportunity for kids to experience this aspect of our sporting heritage and for our chapter to support the goal of NAVHDA’s Youth Program “to remove barriers that keep youth from experiencing the outdoors, particularly hunting. This, in turn, will foster a lifelong love of the outdoor heritage and lifestyle as well as the values that NAVHDA represents.” We are hoping to make this an annual event!
As always, to be successful, we need your support! We are looking for volunteers. We need:
4-6 dog handlers with dogs steady to flush/shot 4 bird planters, general support hands Photographer Someone to write an article for submission to Versatile Dog magazine If you are willing to help, please contact Jerry Smith (847) 609-4713 Shoshinjin@comcast.net
The wingshooting clinic and youth pheasant will be lead by a team of six IDNR certified wingshooting instructors (the field marshal is Rod Campbell). We are planning for 24 youth, organized into six groups of four youth each. A wingshooting instructor will lead each group. Hunts will occur in six separate fields. Launchers will be used to release the birds.
Volunteers should plan to arrive around 10:00 am. We will be providing lunch. Overnight accommodations at the Torstenson Lodge also are available for any volunteers that require it.
